Lanzarote: volcanic land, heroic viticulture, singular wines

DO Lanzarote and Malvasía Volcánica

Bermejos Malvasía Volcánica Seco — DO Lanzarote, the base of Primo

The Lanzarote Designation of Origin protects the wines made on this volcanic island, where vines grow in conditions found nowhere else in the world. Its signature variety is Malvasía Volcánica, a grape that expresses Lanzarote’s mineral, Atlantic character like no other.

Although vermouth is not covered by DO Lanzarote, this Malvasía made by Bodega Los Bermejos is the base of Primo — a vermouth born straight from the volcanic earth.

Picón: a volcanic terroir

On Lanzarote, growers plant their vines in pits dug into the picón (volcanic lapilli), sheltered from the wind by semicircular stone walls called zocos or set in straight “trenches”. This system, unique in the world and recognised by UNESCO, lets the vine capture the night-time moisture and feed on the minerals of the volcanic soil.

This lunar landscape is not just a backdrop — it is an essential part of who Primo de Lanzarote is. The vermouth is born of this land, of its wines and of the botanicals that grow between the lava and the trade winds.
